What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae, and it is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. It grows in both freshwater and saltwater and can adapt to a wide variety of environments, though it does best in sunlight with moderate temperatures. Spirulina is commonly used as a nutritional supplement, and is considered the most nutritionally complete. Some of the nutrients present in spirulina include protein, iron, B12, complex carbohydrates, and vitamins A, K, and B complex.

What are the benefits of spirulina?

Settle in, because it is a long list. Nutritional powerhouse spirulina offers the following benefits:

Fights cancer

Spirulina is extremely rich in beta carotene, which works to enhance antioxidant protection. There are decades of research that show that beta carotene rich foods protect us against cancer. Studies have shown that beta carotene from algae like spirulina is much more effective than other synthetic sources. The natural carotenoids in spirulina have the powerful ability to fight cancer with antioxidants. Oral cancer is particular seems to be aided by spirulina.

Lowers blood pressure

High blood pressure is extremely detrimental, and leads to heart attacks, kidney disease, and strokes. Studies have shown that five grams of spirulina a day lowers blood pressure. This may be due to spirulina increasing the production of nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax.

Increases muscle strength and endurance

Research has shown that spirulina may also be helpful in enhancing your athletic performance. Studies indicated that people who took spirulina before exercise took longer to become tired, and showed an increase in muscle strength.

Lowers cholesterol

Spirulina seems to have a fairly significant impact on your cholesterol. In one study of people with type two diabetes, cholesterol was significantly improved when they took two grams of spirulina a day. Spirulina may work to lower LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, and may even elevate HDL, or “good” cholesterol.

Combats disease

Spirulina contains nutrients such as beta carotene, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, and manganese, all of which help combat disease. More specifically, these nutrients fight free radicals, the molecules which damage your cells through pollution, stress, poor diet, or injury. By battling free radicals, it helps the immune system fight disease.

Supports digestion

Spirulina also helps with your digestion. It works by suppressing bad bacteria, such as e-coli and Candida yeast, while simultaneously stimulating the production of beneficial gut flora. Healthy flora allow us to better absorb nutrients and protects us against infection. Spirulina also helps in building lactobacillus, which relieves constipation.

Removes toxins

There is research that indicates that spirulina helps remove toxins from our body. This is due to its combination of phytonutrients such as chlorophyll and polysaccharides, which work to cleanse our bodies.
